6 Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Clogged (Boca Raton & South Florida)

By Pure Home Florida, a family-owned air duct and dryer vent cleaning company in Boca Raton. Updated October 3, 2026.

The photo above is from a recent job: lint packed behind the outside cover of a dryer vent. A clogged line like this makes the dryer work harder, and loads take longer to dry.

Most clogged dryer vents build up slowly. Lint builds a little with every load, and in South Florida, where many families run the dryer several times a week all year, it adds up faster than people expect. Here are the signs to watch for.

1. Clothes need a second cycle

This is the most common sign. When the vent line is restricted, hot, moist air can't get out, so clothes stay damp. If towels that used to dry in one cycle now need two, the vent is the first thing to check.

2. The dryer or laundry room feels hot

A dryer that feels very hot on top, or a laundry room that heats up more than it used to, can mean the hot air isn't leaving the house the way it should.

3. A burning smell

Lint is very flammable. If you smell something hot or burning while the dryer runs, stop using it for long loads and have the vent checked. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, failure to clean the vent is the leading cause of home dryer fires.

4. Lint around the outside vent flap

Walk outside while the dryer is running. You should feel steady airflow from the vent, and the flap should open. If the flap barely moves, or you see lint packed around it like in our photo, the line is likely restricted.

5. It's been more than a year or two

Many homes do well with dryer vent cleaning every 1 to 2 years. Larger families, pets, and long vent runs usually mean sooner.

6. A long vent run or a roof vent

Many South Florida condos and townhomes have dryer vents that run a long way to an outside wall or exit on the roof. Longer runs collect more lint, and humidity helps it clump.

A quick check you can do today

  • Clean the lint trap before every load. It's the easiest habit with the biggest payoff.
  • Pull the dryer out and look at the flexible hose behind it. It should be free of kinks and crushing.
  • Go outside with the dryer running and feel for strong airflow at the vent.
  • If two or more of the signs above sound familiar, call for a cleaning.

FAQ

How often should I clean my dryer vent in Boca Raton?

Many homes do well every 1 to 2 years. Clean it sooner if clothes take longer to dry, the dryer feels hot, or you see lint at the outside vent.

Can I clean the dryer vent myself?

You can clean the lint trap and check the hose behind the dryer yourself. A full vent line, especially a long one or one that exits on the roof, is best cleaned with a rotary brush made for the job.

Do you clean condo dryer vents?

Yes. Tell us your building when you request an estimate so we can plan for access and any roof vent.
